HOPR Community Newsletter - November 2021
DAO and testnet analysis, a new audit report, and more...
Our November newsletter comes to you just in time for Thanksgiving, and this month we’re thankful for all the amazing data the community have generated for us this past month, particularly in the Wildhorn v2 testnet and the second HOPR DAO experiment. Our analytics team have spent the past few weeks analysing what happened, so we can understand how to improve the HOPR protocol and our governance processes.
HOPR DAO v0.2 Analysis
The second governance experiment for the HOPR DAO ended on October 21st with two votes on how to allocate around $300k in HOPR tokens and DAI earned by the DAO for providing liquidity. The boost NFTs and HOPR token rewards have now been distributed to participants. Read how to claim here.
You can see an overview of the results and participation levels here. But we also wanted to embark on a deeper analysis of what happened: was the process fair, accurate, and a good reflection of the will of the community? Click below to read the first part of our analysis, and stay tuned this week for an in-depth look at the effects of using quadratic voting (QV) for the vote. QV is a hot topic in crypto governance at the moment, but HOPR is one of the first projects to produce solid data here.
Wildhorn Testnet
Our second testnet also generated a lot of useful data and showed that the community is growing more sophisticated in running nodes. While in the first Wildhorn testnet the most called function was simply to open channels to another HOPR node, in Wildhorn v2 it was more balanced between opening channels, sending messages, and redeeming tickets.
Wildhorn v2 also gave us the opportunity to internally test a more sophisticated way of recording relevant participation and some exciting developments related to cover traffic.
HOPR – Payment Channels Security Audit
We’d also like to highlight the results of our latest smart contract audit, conducted by Chain Security. The comprehensive audit of our payment channels smart contract turned up only a handful of issues, which have all now been fixed, with the exception of four low priority issues. You can see the full audit report below.
Audits like these are a crucial part of confirming that the HOPR protocol is able to secure user funds safely, securely, and privately.
HOPR Hunt
The HOPR Hunt has been on a short hiatus but will return for Season 3 shortly with a new improved landing page, more puzzles, and even bigger rewards. In the meantime, there are still some puzzles to solve, including the first bonus puzzle with a rolling jackpot, currently standing at 3000 HOPR tokens. And of course, the 100,000 HOPR token grand prize is still to be won for anyone sharp enough to spot the clues…
HOPR Basics: Cover traffic series
With the launch of cover traffic just a few months off, we’d like to highlight our HOPR Basics articles which provide an easy to understand introduction to this crucial component of how the HOPR protocol keeps user metadata private and provides rewards to node runners who stake their tokens.
For a decentralized mixnet to be truly private and secure, we need what’s known as cover traffic. This is arbitrary data that is transmitted through the network to provide cover for the real data which users are sending between each other.
One of HOPR’s key innovations is to link cover traffic directly to staking: the more HOPR tokens you have, the more cover traffic you’ll receive, and the more HOPR tokens you’ll earn for relaying it. Tying cover traffic to staking solves a lot of problems, but it also introduces new wrinkles. You can read more by clicking the link below.
We’re hiring!
HOPR continues to grow at a rapid pace. The HOPR team is split between our Zurich office and part / full-time remote work with regular paid team trips to Switzerland, like the one in the video above. So get in touch no matter where you’re based! If you’ve got development skills and you’re interested in working at the forefront of the web3 revolution, we’d love to hear from you.
We’re looking for a Protocol Engineer and Senior Software Developer, and more positions are opening all the time.
